230 Fightback is the community-led organization who has taken up the fight for social housing in an abandoned lot at Dundas and Sherbourne. Since the summer of 2008, the lot has been abandoned and unused. On September 22, 2013, the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) initiated the “Taking it Back” campaign, to demand the City of Toronto expropriate the land so that it could be used for social housing. The initial proposed name for the house was Drina’s House, in honour of Drina Joubert, an unhoused woman who froze to death behind the house in 1985. In 2022, the city finally offered to buy the land, only to be outbid by KingSett Capital.
In 2024, 230 Fightback published a zine that educates the public about the financialization of housing. The fight continues.
